St. Therese of
Lisieux
In their new church, the the members of this parish desired humility and simplicity reminiscent of the life of St. Theresea life devoted in large part to prayer and conversation with God.
Faithful to its namesake, the building is of humble stature and natural materials. The master plan reflects the concept of a cloistered convent, yet the strong visual axis with the Sioux Falls Cathedral reinforces connectedness to the outside world. On a hilltop overlooking Sioux Falls, the parish has built the first phase of its tribute to St. Therese, the Little Flower. From the church, the Sioux Falls Cathedral is visible on the horizon. The axis with the Cathedral became a major orgaqnizing principle for the floor plan. The view of the Cathedral from the gathering space is intended to reinforce the connectedness of parish and diocese and is a metaphor for the continuity of the Roman Catholic faith and community.
