The Grand Island Readiness Center is located adjacent to the recently completed AASF, which provided the added complexity of addressing helicopter operations and acoustical considerations. RDG's initial work included the development of a campus master plan providing for a future UAV, Fire station, GOV and POV parking as well as the reorganization of the existing fuel point and vehicular movement. Vehicle movement and separation of GOV and POV are critical aspects of the master plan, as well as the creation of green space and a pedestrian-friendly environment. The central organizing feature of the design is the development of a central gathering space to serve as the point of entry for the classrooms, assembly hall, family support and recruiting areas. The design inspiration and organizing concept for the building was derived from the Oregon Trail that crossed a few miles from the site, and Grand Island's international reputation as the annual confluence of the Sandhills Crane migration. Technology is integrated throughout the facility to maximize training and work efficiency. Security and force protection was designed to not affect the building's aesthetics, but to still protect the building, occupants and contents. The building received LEED Silver Certification. The mechanical system respects sustainable concepts through the use of a geothermal well field with heat pumps. Daylighting is strategically provided throughout the building, including the assembly hall, maintenance bay, administration offices, break areas, classrooms and main corridors, thus reducing electrical consumption.
