New mass timber biotech research and education facility advances genomic innovation, helping shape downtown Dothan’s future.

The Wiregrass Innovation Center on the Carver Campus officially opened this month in downtown Dothan, Alabama, marking a major milestone in the city’s broader effort to transform its urban core into a center for innovation, culture and community life. Designed by RDG Planning & Design, the new facility expands the reach of Huntsville-based HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology into the Wiregrass region and establishes a new hub for genomic research, education and economic development. Future partnerships will include higher education, such as a recently announced internship program at Tuskegee University.

“[With the opening of the Wiregrass Innovation Center,] we celebrate a vision that will benefit not just our region, but extend from the Wiregrass to the World,” said Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba.

Located within Dothan’s rapidly evolving civic district, a few blocks from the city’s historic core, the Center is part of a larger downtown redevelopment initiative led by the City of Dothan and the Wiregrass Foundation. The facility includes three floors of biotech laboratory infrastructure, offices for economic development and research teams, community engagement spaces and a rooftop greenhouse that extends laboratory capacity and connects research directly to the region’s agricultural identity.

“The vision and investment this community is making in its future is both exceptional and inspiring,” said RDG Architect and Principal, Matt Coen, AIA. “We’re grateful to have been part of a project that reflects such a strong commitment to innovation, education and downtown vitality. We look forward to seeing the important work and discoveries that will happen here for years to come, and we’re equally thankful for the relationships and friendships built throughout the process.”

Design for the Center is inspired by the region’s identity, history and economy and reflects the momentum and growth of this community and region. RDG’s design utilizes an exposed mass timber structural system intentionally selected to align with the region's economic narrative, incorporating locally sourced and manufactured southern yellow pine. The resulting building reflects the region’s forestry resources and commitment to sustainable material practices, bringing warmth and structural clarity to downtown while reducing embodied carbon and supporting regional supply chains.

Inside the building, daylighting strategies and visual transparency between circulation, research and collaboration spaces help demystify the scientific work taking place. State-of-the-art laboratories support genomic and genetic research focused on agricultural advancement and human health outcomes, and also create opportunities for student outreach, hands-on learning and workforce development.

The Innovation Center joins several projects currently underway or recently completed as part of Dothan’s downtown redevelopment initiative, including Porter Park, a new events plaza and amphitheater, enhancements to the historic Opera House, a future sports and entertainment arena, mixed-use development, hospitality projects and new civic facilities.

The district's phased implementation is expected to continue over the next several years.
