Sanford Health Breaks Ground on Good Samaritan Society Senior Community in Sioux Falls
The first phase of the project is set to be completed in 2026.
Sanford Health broke ground Monday, September 30, 2024, on the Good Samaritan Society – Founder’s Crossing senior community in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The new campus, located on the corner of Veterans Parkway and 57th Street, will expand access to high-quality care close to home by fulfilling a growing need for senior services on the east side of Sioux Falls.
“Over the next five years, the population of adults over 65 will grow by nearly 20% in the Sioux Falls area,” said Nathan Schema, president and CEO of the Good Samaritan Society. “More senior housing units are needed to keep up with the growth and ensure seniors have access to care and a community designed specifically for them. We couldn’t be more excited to bring this level of service to Sioux Falls and support the needs of the community.”
Designed in partnership with RDG Planning & Design, the leading-edge campus will offer all health and wellness services under one roof, including independent living apartments and villas; assisted living and memory care services; short-term rehabilitation and long-term care; home-based services; life enrichment programs; and a direct connection to a future Sanford Health clinic and Lewis Drug. Amenities like walking paths, outdoor and indoor fitness areas, pickleball, a golf simulator, a large community room, restaurant-style dining and a spa will help residents create meaningful connections alongside friends, family and neighbors.
"This groundbreaking represents a significant step forward in creating spaces where seniors can live, thrive and remain connected to their community," said RDG Principal and Architect Mitch Elliott, AIA. "Our design for this full-continuum community integrates thoughtful amenities and environments that support both independence and care, reflecting our ongoing commitment to crafting meaningful spaces that enhance the quality of life for all residents."
Completed in phases, villas will open first, starting in spring 2026, followed by independent living apartments, assisted living and memory care assisted living apartments, short-term rehabilitation and long-term care center in 2027-2028, and then the eventual opening of the Sanford Health clinic and Lewis Drug. In total, the senior living community will be home to nearly 500 residents and supported by 200 employees.
“The convenience for residents at Founder’s Crossing will make the community a destination to live, retire and receive health care,” said Mike Wilde, M.D., chief physician at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “When completed, the Sanford Health clinic and Lewis Drug will allow more than 300 residents and 200 employees access to primary care, lab, radiology, pharmacy, retail and groceries by simply walking down the hall.”
