RDG in the Media: Historic Funds Move Iconic South Omaha Park Project Forward

The Latino Economic Development Council (LEDC) and Canopy South in Omaha, Nebraska recently provided an updated look at a state-funded public park project, Adelante. The result of historic North-South Omaha economic recovery grants, the park aims to draw more tourism and customers to South Omaha and its nationally designated historic 24th Street business district. It will feature a performance area and a retail and parking structure within walking distance.

RDG Planning & Design has partnered with LEDC and the South Omaha community on a multi-year city commitment to develop an iconic streetscape along South 24th between L and Q Streets. Improvements from that effort seek to reinforce the corridor’s Latino influence and pedestrian character through a renewed Plaza de la Raza, centered at 24th and N Streets. The $25 million funds from the North-South grant, expected to start flowing to the Adelante project later this year, will be used to transform the plaza into a vibrant area that blends with the existing streetscape and emphasizes Latino culture while also reflecting historic diversity.

Organizers of the reenvisioned plaza project say the long-held vision for a community gathering spot will be realized by the funds received through the South-North Omaha economic recovery grant program.
