Designed by RDG Planning & Design, Plaza de la Raza will create a vibrant civic destination that celebrates South Omaha's cultural identity while strengthening community connections.

Construction has started on Plaza de la Raza, a new public space that will transform a longtime parking lot into a vibrant community destination in the heart of South Omaha. According to a recent Nebraska Examiner article, work is underway on the $25 million project, which has been years in the making and represents one of the largest public investments in South Omaha in decades.

Community partners Canopy South and the Latino Economic Development Council, in collaboration with the City of Omaha, are leading the project. It is expected to become a cultural, recreational and economic hub for the historic South 24th Street corridor.

RDG Planning & Design has worked with project partners to refine the design and advance preconstruction efforts with Kiewit. When complete, the plaza will feature a performance stage and amphitheater, flexible gathering spaces, play areas, shaded seating, public art and landscaped open space designed to support community events throughout the year.

The design celebrates South Omaha's rich cultural identity and immigrant history while creating new opportunities for community connection and economic growth. Often referred to as Nebraska's "Ellis Island," South Omaha has been shaped by generations of immigrants. Plaza de la Raza honors that legacy while celebrating the neighborhood's vibrant Mexican heritage and Latino-owned businesses through welcoming public spaces, custom shade structures, play features and a central performance area that connects directly to businesses along South 24th Street.

Construction is expected to continue through 2027. A new city-owned parking garage nearby will replace parking lost during redevelopment while supporting continued investment and activity throughout the district.
