RDG in the Media: Top 10 Trends in Assisted Living + Memory Care Facilities
Mitch Elliott speaks to Building Design+Construction and Multifamily Pro+ to discuss the latest trends in senior living facilities.
With an aging inventory of communities across the United States, the assisted living and memory care market is expected to grow strongly in 2025 and beyond. While the current economic conditions are delaying most other construction projects, these senior living projects continue to be funded and move forward. In response to the expected growth, Building Design+Construction and Multifamily Pro+ interviewed architects and designers in the senior living space, including RDG’s Mitch Elliott, AIA, to discuss how assisted living and memory care facilities will change and adapt over the coming years.
Elliott discussed that hospitality-focused spaces like bars and bistros are becoming common, even in assisted living communities. He shared that “the enjoyment of food and the social aspects surrounding dining remain strong to older adults even as their abilities begin to decline.” Likewise, Elliott noted that large, open indoor spaces are trending toward smaller, more defined spaces to benefit residents with dementia. While some residents prefer low-density spaces, others gravitate to smaller spaces because they allow for greater social engagement and connection.
