A bold public–private partnership delivers a new, much-needed early learning center in San Antonio’s South Side, designed in collaboration with RDG Planning & Design and Pfluger Architects.

RDG, in collaboration with Pre-K 4 SA, HOLT Group and a team of specialized consultants, is proud to announce the official opening of the new South Education Center, a purpose-driven early learning environment designed to serve the children and families of San Antonio's South Side. The grand opening event, held on October 22, 2025, celebrated a continued commitment to the children and families of San Antonio and highlighted the power of a visionary public–private partnership between HOLT Group and Pre-K 4 SA.

The new South Education Center, located at 3510 S WW White Road, is strategically positioned to address the need for affordable and accessible early childhood education in an area identified as a childcare desert. The City of San Antonio's Early Learning Landscape Study, released earlier this year, revealed that South San Antonio has the highest need for quality early learning options, particularly for infants and toddlers. This center is designed to meet that need head-on and goes beyond traditional pre-kindergarten programming to offer care for children as young as six weeks.

“This center is a powerful example of the role business leaders can play in collaborating to build foundations of success for San Antonio, and in this case, ensuring children have access to affordable, high-quality early education,” said Pre-K 4 SA CEO Dr. Sarah Baray. “Working together as a community, we become more responsive, courageous and innovative.”

RDG served as part of the architectural design team alongside Pfluger Architects, working closely with early learning specialists to develop an intentional, immersive space grounded in child-centric design principles. The new center is inspired by San Antonio’s culture and natural landscape, utilizing biophilic design elements and sustainable strategies to create a nurturing, place-based experience for both children and educators. The 53,000-SF facility includes indoor and outdoor classrooms, training and support spaces for educators, and administrative offices — all configured to inspire curiosity, creativity and connection.

“Our role was to help translate Pre-K 4 SA’s educational philosophy into a built environment that fosters discovery, equity and lifelong learning,” said RDG Architect and Partner, Ed Buglewicz, AIA. “We’re incredibly proud to have contributed to a project that so clearly demonstrates how design can help build a more resilient and inclusive community, and a space that supports Pre-K 4 SA’s mission to improve early learning access and address the broader workforce needs of the region.”

G.W. Mitchell served as contractor on the project, with additional design support provided by CDS Muery, Rialto Studios, Cleary Zimmermann, Combs Consulting Group and Lundy & Franke Engineering, Inc.
