The Woodlands at Canterfield is a newly-constructed senior living community on the site of a former apple orchard. Encompassing 90 assisted living and 36 memory care resident apartments, RDG Planning & Design's interior design incorporates thoughtful landscape references amid hospitality-inspired amenities to create an engaging resident experience.

Encompassing 90 assisted living and 36 memory care resident apartments, RDG's interior design incorporates thoughtful landscape references amid hospitality-inspired amenities to create an engaging resident experience. The firm's interior design for the 137,000 SF community draws inspiration from the locale, establishing an overarching woodland aesthetic intended to bring delight, variety and joy to residents. The team worked closely with Franciscan Ministries to select bright and contemporary finishes and bring nature-forward features to the forefront.

A focal point of the design is the building's two-story volume entrance, which the team leveraged to showcase a custom woodland tree sculpture. Amenity spaces, including multiple clubrooms, a theater, a library, a game room, activity spaces with demonstration kitchens and an art studio, carry the natural theme throughout. Finishes, lighting and architectural details are carried through a central commons space, connecting assisted living and memory care buildings and creating equity and connection between the two levels of care. The result is an engaging community that accommodates a variety of resident activities while evoking the heritage of its location. RDG collaborated with AG Architecture to design the project.

Nature-inspired elements, ample daylighting, indoor-outdoor connections and natural materials were integrated throughout the design. The high level of finish and well-appointed art and accessories achieve the desired level of luxury while providing a comfortable setting to inspire healthy living.

Memory care received the same level of finish and design detail as assisted living but was modified in subtle ways to address cognitive needs. Nostalgic-themed artwork (vintage cars, planes, etc.) evokes positive memories. The well-appointed spa/bathing room makes bathing a spa-like experience with dimmable lighting, warm, wood-look porcelain tile finishes, and an electric fireplace for ambiance.
