Clear Lake 4th
Avenue South
Corridor
The 4th Avenue South Corridor project reimagines one of the primary gateways to Clear Lake, transforming a conventional roadway into a welcoming, memorable arrival experience for residents and visitors.
The project includes converting the existing four-lane roadway to a three-lane configuration, with a series of roundabouts at key intersections from the Interstate 35 interchange to the City Beach area. While engineering improvements focused on safety and traffic flow, RDG's role centered on enhancing the corridor through landscape design, placemaking features and a cohesive signage and wayfinding system that reflects the identity of Clear Lake. As a major entry into the community, the corridor lacked a strong sense of arrival and did little to reflect Clear Lake's character as a recreational lake destination. The city sought a design solution that would welcome travelers, enhance the corridor's visual quality, and create a memorable gateway that celebrates the community's connection to the lake. The design concept draws inspiration from sailing, which is one of Clear Lake's most recognizable recreational activities. Sailboat sail forms and graphics became the central visual motif, incorporated into placemaking elements within key roundabouts along the corridor. These sail-inspired features create sculptural landmarks that guide visitors through the corridor while reinforcing the community's lake culture. A gateway welcome sign was also designed to strengthen the sense of arrival. Its materials and detailing were intentionally aligned with the historic lake and seawall located in downtown Clear Lake, a structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This connection links the new corridor improvements to the community's historic waterfront character. Landscape improvements further reinforce the corridor identity while supporting sustainability goals. Plantings are composed primarily of native Iowa species, creating a resilient landscape that provides seasonal interest and ecological value while framing the roadway and placemaking features. These elements create a playful, distinctive entry experience that reflects Clear Lake's recreational spirit and offers travelers a clear, memorable welcome to the community.
