Session Details
RDG Urban Planning Charlie Cowell, AICP, will present at the following sessions during the APA Iowa Conference.
Active Transportation – From Student Project to Reality, October 16, 2:30 p.m.
The City of Sioux City partnered with the University of Iowa in 2015 as part of the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities. One project completed by University of Iowa graduate students was an Active Transportation Plan. A major component of the plan was to create a City Council-appointed Active Transportation Advisory Committee (ATAC). The City Council created and began appointing members to the ATAC in 2018, and since then, the City has approved a Bike Facility Study, installed the first on-street bike lanes in the community, and added miles of new trails. This session will cover the history of the partnership with the University of Iowa, the creation of the ATAC, and the successes and outreach the Committee has achieved.
AICP Exam Prep, October 17, 9:25 a.m.
Planners seeking AICP certification should attend this session, which will provide an overview of the application and exam process. The session will cover the benefits of AICP, studying for the exam, and following APA’s path to the certification process. Recommendations and resources will also be shared.
Housing Hot Takes: Debating Qualitative Observations, October 18, 11:00 a.m.
Over the past decade, RDG has conducted housing studies throughout the Midwest. Most of these studies include community surveys about people’s needs and preferences. Our database includes years of data from dozens of surveys and tens of thousands of responses. This session will provide an overview of changes observed over time on topics such as preferred housing types, needed price points, supported housing policies, and more. The data will be supplemented with the presenters’ expert observations of major changes and trends. The session will conclude with an open debate with attendees on qualitative housing perceptions versus possible realities and policy approaches for the future.
