Luther College Celebrates Opening of New Gerdin Fieldhouse for Athletics and Wellness

Luther College has officially celebrated the grand opening of the Gerdin Fieldhouse for Athletics and Wellness, marking the completion of a transformational renovation and expansion project that reimagines the Regents Center, one of the institution's most important campus destinations. The project, designed by RDG Planning & Design, was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility dedication in May 2026.

The opening of the Gerdin Fieldhouse represents the culmination of a vision years in the making. In August 2024, Luther College students, alumni, donors and project partners gathered for a unique "wall-breaking" ceremony to celebrate the start of construction. Less than two years later, the $24 million facility now stands as one of the most significant investments in student life and athletics in Luther's history.

“The new entrance, team room and so many other student-facing spaces not only have great functionality for our student-athletes and coaches but also that ‘wow’ factor we were looking for from a recruiting standpoint. The spaces give you a feeling of pride, success and spirit that we felt in some of our newer competition venues outside but never in the middle of our aging building,” said Luther College Associate Director of Athletics and Head Softball Coach, Renae Rost Hartl. 

Through a comprehensive 74,000 SF renovation and a 15,000 SF addition, the Gerdin Fieldhouse transforms Luther College's historic Regents Center into a modern destination for athletics, wellness and community engagement. While preserving the spirit and legacy of the original facility, the project introduces flexible, contemporary spaces that support the evolving needs of students, athletes and the broader campus community. Designed to foster physical well-being, connection and belonging, the facility advances Luther's mission by creating opportunities for competition, recreation and gathering under one roof.

"From the beginning, our goal was to create a facility that reflects Luther College's commitment to the holistic development of its students," said RDG Architect and Partner, Nathan Harris, AIA. "The Gerdin Fieldhouse elevates the student-athlete experience by creating modernized dedicated spaces for each athletic team and finding new opportunities for building bonds across the entire student-athlete community. It’s a place designed to feel distinctly Luther."

RDG's design reimagines how people arrive, move through and experience the facility, transforming it into a more welcoming and intuitive campus destination. A new entrance, enhanced gathering spaces and modernized athletic, training and support areas create opportunities for interaction beyond competition and recreation alone. By bringing these experiences together within a cohesive environment, the Gerdin Fieldhouse strengthens Luther's culture of wellness, belonging and engagement, creating a place where students can thrive both on and off the field.
